CRISTO REY ARTS & CRAFTS CENTER INAUGURATED

Belmopan City, Monday, August 3rd, 2015 – The BELIZE Natural Energy Charitable Trust is pleased to have partnered with the Area Representative for Cayo Central, Hon. Rene Montero, and the Cristo Rey Women’s Group to fund the construction of an arts and crafts center in the village of Cristo Rey.  Construction commenced in November of 2014 and was completed in June 2015 at a cost of $62,500.  The Trust contributed $49,000 while the Ministry of Works contributed $13,500 in counterpart funding.  Inauguration of the building was held on Monday morning, August 3rd in the village of Cristo Rey.  Present at the event were the Area Representative, Hon. Rene Montero, who delivered the keynote address; Chairman of the Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust (BNECT), Mr. Alberto August; Mr. Daniel Gutierez, Trustee of the BNECT; staff of the BNECT as well Mayor Earl Trapp, Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena; personnel from the Ministry of Works, and residents of the village.

In June of 2012, the Cristo Rey Women’s Group, comprising of 30 women, was formed with the ambitious goal of pursuing productive activities that would benefit the group and their families through supplementary income generation.  At that time, the Women’s Group utilized the Community Center for their activities, which was inadequate for the use and further development of the group.  Realizing the dire need for a building of their own, the Trust was approached for support to construct an arts and crafts center.  The acquisition of their own building will now provide the infrastructure needed for accomplishing their goal and objectives of having a combined production unit and sales outlet to conduct a sustainable and successful community enterprise.

The Belize Natural Energy Charitable Trust (BNECT) is a partnership between the Government of Belize and Belize Natural Energy Limited, established by Deed of Trust dated February 25th, 2008. The Trust was established to make a difference in the lives of Belizeans and thus seeks to empower people and communities to thrive in a harmonious, socially and environmentally responsible manner so that they can be the conscious architects of their own future. The Trust’s mission is to serve as a catalyst for people and communities to believe in themselves so they can achieve their full potential. Opportunities for development are provided through grants for educational-related projects, capacity building programs and initiatives that support the social environment.  For more information on the BNECT, visit www.bnetrust.org.
